Everything You Should Know About Restaurant Table Bases

When you go to a restaurant, do you call to thank the chef from the kitchen? Yes, of course. What about sous chefs? He has a major share in every food prepared in the kitchen. Similarly, when you sit on your chairs, and enjoy the warm meal, you admire the chair, table tops, and f…

We at Vogue Decor call table bases on the unsung hero of the restaurant. Day in and day out, these table bases stay firmly planted on the ground and enable you to enjoy your food without wobbling and spills.

If you are a seasoned restaurant owner, you already know about the importance of table bases. For new restaurant owners, here is a complete guide to how to get the best table bases for your restaurant.

Questions You Need to Ask Before You Buy Table Bases

When you ask yourself questions, you will gain some clarity on what to buy and what not to buy. Here are some solid questions to ponder:

What should be the right size of the table base?

Does the size and weight of the tabletop matter for the table base?

Am I specific about the table base material according to the restaurant’s theme or am I open to ideas?

Will I have tables of standard size or would I use tables with bar stools?

All these questions will help you determine what material, size, and type of table bases you would need for the restaurant. Now that we have some clear answer, let’s explore other sections of the guide and find the right table base.

Types of Table Bases

First thing first, you would need to identify the type of table base that works for your restaurant space. Table bases are more about functionality and stability than aesthetics. No one is throwing aesthetics out of the window.

Here are some popular types:

Sorted With the Design Type

Pedestal Table Bases

It is an elegant design with simplicity. This design works for small to medium sized tables. The pedestal table bases work for rectangular, round and square table tops. There is only one column that supports the table top hence more leg room for patrons.

Four-legged ǀ X-Prong Table Base

Now this one comes with four legs that wouldn’t be a bother. But this design offers more stability and aesthetics. Some restaurant’s themes work well with the four legs, while some floors are so crowded you need to keep it clean.

Only you would know depending on floor space and number of furniture pieces which design would work best for your space.

Bolted to the Floor

Sometimes, restaurants have a plan that doesn’t allow them to move the tables a lot. Hence you can always use the bolted to the floor table bases. Now you can use any kind of table top, whether it be granite or oak wood – the table is secure and bolted to the floor.

Sorted According to Size, Materials, and Dimension

Then there is some sorting to be sorted depending on dimension and size of the table bases.

Sort with Width and Stability

Width of the table base must meet the size of the table top. The base should be at least half the size of the table top whether square or round. If you maintain at least the size or diameter, it will create the balance for the table.

Weight 101

Whether you plan to use marble table top or plastic, the table base should be able to manage the weight. For a plastic or aluminum table top, a decent weight of table base is a requirement.

Materials for Functionality

Every material offers different functional convenience. For instance, wooden table bases offer great support, whereas metal table bases whether four-legged or platform provide equal support. Some tables use plastic too, but that is not a great option.

Vogue Decor prefers to use the metal for table bases as they are sturdy, durable and easy to move around.

How to Maintain Table Bases

The table base doesn’t seem like it but it requires some work. For metal and steel finish, a simple mop with mild soap is all you need. After a couple of years, splash some fresh coat to restore it back to its gleam and shine.

Wooden requires a little more work. On a day-to-day basis, clean it with mild soap and cloth. After a few weeks, use a wood polish to make it shine again. These aren’t ideal for outdoor space. If you use wooden table bases in outdoor space, you would need to get them polished eve…

Aluminum and plastic bases are no work. Just clean them with a damp cloth and mild soap and they are good to go. They do not require any kind of polishing or repaint every couple of months.

Dos and Don’ts for Table Bases

Ensure the table bases complement the size of table tops.

Check the screw and bolts every few weeks.

A piece of felt or rubber beneath the table base to protect the floor is a smart idea.

If you have an outdoor space, choose the weather resistant materials.

Don’t push the limits of the table base. Keep the equilibrium between the weight of the table base and the table top.

Do not expose the materials that aren’t created for the outdoor environment. Extra moisture can ruin wood, metal and steel.
